When the subject of mattresses comes up, there is one question that regularly is raised – what is the difference between coil and sprung mattresses? In the following post we are going to put an end to the confusion and mystery and explain what each of these types of mattresses are and what their main differences from each other are.

Let’s start with coil sprung mattresses.

What Are Coil Sprung Mattresses?

Coil sprung mattresses feature springs that are made from wire that is wound into a tight spring shape and kept in the correct position, so they don’t un tighten by a wire frame. These mattresses are often used in orthopedic beds and provide firm support. If they are too firm for you though, memory foam can be incorporated into the mattress construction to soften it somewhat. As there is less work involved in making coil sprung mattresses, they are more affordable than other kinds. Another major beneficial difference between coil and pocket mattresses is that coils tend to be lighter.

As well as the beneficial differences, there are also some downsides to coil mattresses, such as the fact that they do not have the same lifespan.

What are Pocket Sprung Mattresses?

Onto pocket sprung mattresses now and the biggest difference between these two types is the fact that with pocket sprung varieties, every individual spring has its own pocket and then every pocket is connected to one another. This means that all the pockets these mattresses can move independently from one another which I turn means there is less chance of hearing the springs move and rub against one another.

In comparison to coil sprung mattresses, pocket sprung mattresses take a whole lot of time longer to construct and use a lot more materials, which is part of the reason why they are so expensive. Obviously, the payoff from that is that you get mattresses that have been designed and manufactured to last longer.

Furthermore, because the springs in these kinds of mattresses work independently, there is less of a chance of any ‘rolling together’ or dipping in the middle of mattresses that is likely to happen with other mattresses. In addition to all these great points, there is also the difference that pocket sprung mattresses often come with other materials such as horsehair, lambs’ wool and cashmere or there may be hand stitching on the sides to provide additional support around the edges. So, we hope this post has helped to show the many differences, both positive and negative between the two, incredibly popular mattress types.
